History of the name Thien Cung Cave

Every cave in Halong has its own legend behind and so does Thien Cung Cave. The story of this cave is appealing, related to the formation process of the cave. Date back a long time ago, after helping the people to defeat the invaders, Dragon King returned to its cave. But there was a severe drought that year, so locals had to find Dragon King ask the King to make rain. However, many people didn’t make their way back home and were lost in the sea. But one young couple still decided to find Dragon King. They have a beautiful daughter named May, Dragon King immediately fell in love with her and love brought them together. They had a spectacular wedding at the heart of the cave, attended by gods, genies, fairies, and dragons. Now we can still see images of these guests identified among the stalactites and stalagmites that fill the cavernous halls. They raised 100 children together inside the cave and May used to take bath for her children in 3 clear inner ponds of the cave.

As their children were all grown up, May took 50 of them to explore the new lands and build new lives. Dragon King stayed with the other 50 children to help their hometown, continue to be its guardians. The selfless act earned the Dragon King and his kids honorable petrification in the cave, and now many stalactites and stalagmites are said to resemble the 50 children and their father who stayed behind.

Location of Heaven Cave

Thien Cung Cave is situated in the southwest of Halong Bay, only 4km from Dau Go Island and 25 meters above the sea level. After the first discovery, the location of the Heavenly Palace was forgotten. The jungle grew over the entrance to Thien Cung cave, and it was only remembered through stories that were often passed around and retold. In 1993, during a bad storm, fishermen were drifted into the cave and had to find a place for shelter. By chance, they found this place and they were amazed to discover the ancient mysterious caverns. The system of stalactites and stalagmites with different forms and shapes made the cave become noted and attractive to more and more tourists.

The way to get to Heaven Cave

The Heaven Cave was opened for tourists since 1998 and it is the closest cave to the mainland and easiest to access by boat. To go there, you can take a cruise and the journey will take about one hour. Its rediscovery was widely celebrated and work to engage tourism in the cave began quickly. The overgrown entrance to the cave was cut away and a walkway was built, meaning visitors now enter through a narrow gap in the rock; a proverbial eye of a needle; to enter Heaven.

The Halong Bay day trip operated by our company is one of the best options to observe the scenic view of the magnificent Halong Bay.
